new harddrive with slack

hi,

i'm completely clueless as to slackware other than what i've heard of it.

i'm thinking of getting another hard disk soon and putting slack on it. this is in addition to my old harddrive which is a dual boot with windows xp and mandrake 9.2 on it. how would i go about this? i'd really like to try slack out.

thanks

Simply install the harddrive as normal (slave on ide0 or as a master or slave on ide1 - dont know how you got your harddrives and cdroms setup) and pop in the slack install cd. Use fdisk to partition the new harddisk with a linux partition (setup will format for you). You can either use the same swap for slack as you do for mandrake or make a new parition for it on the new drive. From thier on you should not have any problems, the install is fairly simple and straight forward. If you dont plan on using kde or gnome you only need the first CD, otherwise you will need all 3. Lots of window managers come with slack like blackbox. MAKE A BOOT DISK. Once installed reboot into mandrake and edit you boot manager to include slackware. Youll then be able to tri-boot into slack, mandrake and XP.

Have fun!

Lilo should let you boot into anyone of the three. However if you are set up to multiboot already you should be able to add an entry for slackware, Are you using grub now? Or how do you boot mandrake and XP?

The reason I said to boot into mandrake was so that you can edit your lilo or grub menus to put slackware in there so that you wont have to boot off the disk.

Useing Lilo or Grub or any of the other boot managers out there will allow you to have a choice of any of the 3 systems to boot into.
The slackware install will ask if you want to put lilo as your boot manager, since you already can dual boot I suggest you skip that.

i see. i think i'm using whatever mandrake uses to let you select between mandrake and windows. ( i think it's lilo). are there any resources for newcomers to slack to refer to? such as where the config files, etc are located? i'd prefer not to clog the board with simple questions

http://www.slackware.com/book/ is a good source and im sure you could find hundreds more by searching with google.
There was a good thread started bout a week ago, maybe less, that had alot of good links to slackware resources - let me see if I can find it for you.

Not to familiar with lilo, but as a guess I would have to say the config files for it are in /boot/

The config file for lilo is /etc/lilo.conf
Most config files for linux are located in the /etc directory
Files that control bootup are in /etc/rc.d this is where everything starts.
/etc/inittab is the first file processed by init after the kernel finishes loading, then files under /etc/rc.d according to the runlevel specified in /etc/inittab
