New Distro time?
 

Anyone have any insight into what's going on with Slackware?? Is it being actively maintained?? No activity in the Changelog since December 14th leads me to believe it's time to start looking at other distros........??

Slackware will always be worked on.... But on a side note, I remember seeing that Pat was taking a small break or something, unless I don't remember correctly.

Concerns and wild speculation have been aired in this security list updates thread, but the short version is that no one knows what is going on because we've not been told anything. All we have to go on is that there's been a noticeable lack of security updates recently, and no significant work on current in quite a time.


I'm more concerned about the stable updates than what's going on in 'current' but whether it's time to jump ship or not is something each of us will have to decide for ourselves. I'm not quite at the jumping ship stage yet, but if things continue the way they are for much longer then it's simply going to get impractical to keep patching up the system myself.

Everyone, calm down now. There's no reason whatsoever to think that Slackware's future is uncertain. If Slackware was in any sort of trouble, I'm sure we would have been informed about it by now.

Well everyone will do what they need to do. I for one am content to wait for the next updates to appear. Slackware all the way for me. :)

I've always felt uncomfortable when frequent updates tend to be rushed in, as if the developers are deliberately fixing only one bug at a time and the users will migrate immediately if one day they don't see the updates bubble.
The lack of updates implicates that everything is working OK and no bugs are found. What's the point of putting up updates just to create the illusion of activity? Perhaps I should've restrained myself from posting this, but I really don't see the point of such threads.

Well.......I'm sorry I brought it up then. It's just that I've been using Slack since version 7.1 and never before has there been such a long time between updates. I'm glad everything is OK !!

while you wait, you could go for kernel 3.2.1 and alien bob's kde 4.6.5, it really is worth it.

You want 3.2.2. 3.2.1 hasn't got the fix for the local root vulnerability that was introduced in 2.6.39.

Good point! Making amends myself right now :)

Don't know about the Kernel but the Kde 4.6.5 was not worth it for me.

you can always upgrade to -Current and move to KDE 4.8.0
about the kernel, you can also compile your own kernels

I'm running -Current with Linux Kernel 3.2.2 with KDE 4.8.0

Thank you. I have 13.37 running fine and have committed a lot of resources to it. Actually it is running d*** great! I see no need to upgrade. If I want to upgrade my desktop daily, I can install Windows. Oh wait, I did. :)

Maybe, just maybe, Slackware is running great for others as it is.

So I would say to all you worry worts: Slackware is still alive! Please have some patience.
