Network not working!! driver loaded, rc.inet1 is good?!

hello,

I am feeling a bit frustrated trying to get my NIC working with slack 9.1...
Here are the details:

#lspci -v
Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c556 Hurricane CardBus (rev 10)
Subsytem: 3Com Corp.: Unknown device 6456

#ifconfig eth0
Everything looks good here: has correct IP info, mask, etc...

#lsmod
Lists 3c59x as loaded, which is supposedly the appropriate driver for my card

Then I run /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 again to make sure the config is loaded...

Yet I can't ping my router or anything besides myself!
What else should I try?

thanks!

thanks for the quick reply

to answer your questions:
- i dont think i have dhcpd running, but I am not using DHCP for anything – this computer is assigned a static IP

- my rc.inet1.conf settings are correct

- no firewalls between this box and the internet

the ping error says Destination Host Unreachable

#ifconfig
does show that eth0 and lo are both configured and running

#ifconfig eth0 up
does not seem to change anything - i get no error msg and ifconfig output looks the same

before i made this post i went through the linux networking HOWTO and read a bunch of threads on this board... This one has got me pretty stumped!

and just to clarify, this is a slackware 9.1 question. I just installed it yesterday and have not updated my profile yet (which i am about to do )

thanks

i ran netconfig again and entered all of my ISP-provided values (which work for the MacOS X computer i'm typing on now):

machine name: adsl-67-122-xxx-xxx.dsl.pltn13
domain: pacbell.net
(do these even matter?)
(I tried several host/domain combos both made-up and registered...)

IP: 67.122.xxx.xxx
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 67.122.xxx.xxy (my ISP's router address)
DNS: 206.13.28.12

I don't have the feeling that something is wrong with this info...

thanks

I know this might sound a bit anal , but go to your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf file and comment out all the ethernet interfaces you don't need.

I had the EXACT same problem to you , and after I commented them out , and rebooted , everything was up and running.

Could be just luck though

You mention at one point about a router. Do you have a separate router that is plugged into the dsl modem and then your box is plugged into the router? If so, then if dsl is like cable, those settings from your ISP are actually to be put into your router settings, not your box. Let us know.
