netconfig screwing things up?

Ok, I think I broke my ADSL connection... I installed Slack 9.1, the rp-pppoe, not realizing it was already included, set up the connection, and then it worked great. But then, in act of folly (hindsight being 20-20 and all...) I ran netconfig to change the hostname of my machine, told it to pick DHCP (on a laptop, because the service works with PPPOE and the modem/router assigns IP addresses via DHCP), rebooted, tried to connect as root with adsl-start... and nada. No connection. Or rather, it says ..Connected! alright, but it can't get past the modem. I had this problem before with Mandrake 9.1, and fixed it by adding a ppp0 entry to the Shorewall config file. But that was then, and now I don't have any special firewall installed that I know of (other than the standalone provided by rp-pppoe) so I can't fix it that way anymore. How do I fix it? Any ideas? Thank you.

Oh, pinging beyond the router/modem fails 100% of the time. Any host.

And another thing: since I have a dual boot machine, the Windows side works beautifully, it's not an ISP problem.
