netbeans installation problem

Well if this doesnot work then it really will be goodbye to Slackware and hello ole faithful Mandriva...

Problem, downloaded Java 5 version 8 and the latest JVM, okay and added both to my PATH. Trying now to install Netbeans. On attempting to install I get the following...(uses an install shield gui)...

Quote:

/downloads# ./netbeans-5_0-linux.bin

Initializing InstallShield Wizard........
Launching InstallShield Wizard........

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag.
Whats going on. Anyone see the problem or seen this before.

Do you have a JAVA_HOME environment variable set?
Code:
export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/jdk
I believe that Netbeans may use that. I know that Eclipse does. Just an idea.

Also, are you running the netbeans installer as root? Good luck and don't give up on Slack yet. I've run both Netbeans and Eclipse on Slack with no problem.

Two ways around this. First is not the securest but works quickly. As a user before swithching to su, use the command ' xhost + '. su in and do what you need. When done exit su and run ' xhost - '. Search here and google and use the man command to learn more on xhost.

Second is to install gksu. Once install you issue a command as a user like ' gksu kedit /etc/fstab '. It will open a screen for a password and then start kedit. This is a more secure option.

already set the path variable...remind me what is JAVA_HOME pointing to, the bin directory, the java command or what.
