I don't have any experience about Slackware and some experimented friends advised me to try it, but I still hesitant. I want to know if its "perfomances" as they said makes me to enter this advanture or

man,don't do it. When you get it setup, it will be so stable and quick, you wont have anything to do but use it.

And you'll have to remove all those other Linux distros and only have Slackware on your sig.

Well, I'm a recent Slackware convert coming from Mandrake...I absolutely love it. I used Mandy for about 1.5 years before searching for my next distribution as Mandrake is a nice way to cross over to linux. I've learned so much more in the past 6 weeks and have really tweaked my system. I haven't broken anything permanently and this distribution helps me to feel more comfortable with linux every day. I would encourage you to try it out.

Slackware is nice, fast and simple.

however some of the packages are not very well intergrated, ie you can't print using cups from gimp without recompiling gimp, kde has no intergration with gphoto or scanners etc... (you have to complie gphoto your self...)

From a desktop point of view, you have to do quite a bit of compiling to get a working desktop

uh, I would hazard a guess -X- is being extremely sarcastic and in fact is saying use slackware and you may never try another distribution again...it's that good!

I started downloading Slackware 10.0, In few time, I think I will face huge problems with it as I had with Debian (My best Linux), I'll become a difficulty lover.

Setting up my new PC with Slackware was painless; and IS painless provided you do your homework before you install it. In my case I was buying a new PC so I first made sure all the hardware I was putting into it was compatible. Next I made a list of what I do with a PC, and then checked out the Slackware packages list to get a good idea of what applications I needed to get the system up and running how I wanted it.

In my case, I do a lot of -

I'm teaching myself C++ and I like to build apps from source sometimes or a new Kernel every now and then so I needed the lib's adn a compiler

DB and CGI programming with Perl - so I needed the MySQL package, and Apache as well and a text editor VI or Elvis

I like listening to music - so I installed the XMMS package

I wanted to watch DVD's - Install Xine and dvdlibcss

I hate asking questions in IRC - so I installed the Linux FAQ's and How-To's

I wanted a fast, lightweight desktop - Install fluxbox and Xorg packages respectively

All that along with CD ripping/burning utilities and your general base Linux system and Kernel sources and I had no problem what-so-ever. I did have a bit of previous experience, I've used Free BSD for about the past 2 years now but whatever the case, you'll be fine provided you read the on-line help forums here and put some serious thought into what you'll be doing and then make sure that either Slack offers the packages you need to get your tasks accomplished or that you can get the source code easily.

Also, Slackware has a great book published on line at: <a href="http://www.slackware.com/book/">Slackware.com</a> and there's a convenient, up-to-date list of packages there too that you can look at and read about while making your decision on what applications to install.

Read a lot, and you'll be just fine.

Yeah, you ask on a Slackware forum and you tend to get that :-)

I agree. Try all other intersting distros to you first, because once you use slackware you will be unable to use any other linux distro due to how much faster, smarter, and more stable slackware will seem in comparison.

This is total truth. I now laugh at GUIs because of Slackware.
Over the holidays I will be "upgrading" all our production servers with Slackware.
Why? Because Debian just doesn't feel right
