Need help with MySQL

After installing Slackware 9 with Apache/PHP/MySQL, I did this for MySQL:

# mysql_install_db
# chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql
# safe_mysqld &

# /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password mynewpass

How do I log in and create tables, etc?

# /usr/bin/mysql
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)

Any help appreciated, thanx.

/usr/bin/mysql -p

Use the newpass, and see how that goes

That one suckered me for a good, oh I don't know, probably month. I'd give up and come back, eventually figured the sucker out from eventually understanding the error messages a bit better, although they aren't that helpful either at times
