Unhappy Need help with minimalist Slack 8.1 install

I have installed a minimalist (slack81.zip) distro on an old laptop.
I've got the pcmcia modem etc all working can get on the internet compile etc. (no x) I have run into two problems I have not been able to solve:
1. Cannot use telnet get "command not found" error
2. I installed swaret and it gives the same error. Also swaret says to check the nic. I don't have one, so I entered ttyS1 (pcmcia modem) and still get errors. I have gone to Slackware.com looking for binaries or packages for ifconfig and telnet and have had no luck. I'm assuming these are part of some package(s)
that need to be installed. If so, which ones do I need? If not, any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.
