Need help setting up midi

I've read a few resources on the net, but am unsure about MIDI or how to set it up on Slackware.

I want to play MIDI files as well as convert them to other formats such as ogg, mp3, wave.

Would appreciate info on how MIDI works (just looking for a basic understanding so I know how to use it) and what I need to do to set it up on Slackware.

Here is some information I found; I'm not sure what else I need:

Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 06)

root@Slack:~# cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1371
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371

My only experience with Midi is when playing doom1 on Slackware using prboom
Take a look at Music bottom page
I use and suggest you take a look at:
AlienBOB's Slackbuilds
and Kyle Guinn's @
Good luck!
