.rar is a file used mainly by winrar (.rar is just like .zip and .tar.gz)

either install winrar with wine or go into windows and use winrar to unrar the file

there will hopefully be an iso in there which you can burn to a cd as a cd image

if there is no iso, then download from bittorrent (torrents available at slackware's site) or ftp.slackware.com

where did you download from anyway? i recommend you download from a site mirror or slackware or use bittorrent and forget about what you've downloaded (it might be tainted)

One question..........are you sure it's a rar file and not an iso that somehow got renamed with a rar extension? Probably a dumb question, but had to ask anyway.

i have another question
how many CDs is slackware, 2 or 4
the ones on linuxiso.org have only 2
but when using the FTPs listed by slackware.com
their are 4
so which is it?

For Slack 9.1, there are only two install CDs (1 and 2), the other two are the sources.....

You know, sources to core utilities and the OS in general. You probably don't need them unless you're going to be messing around with Slackware and its components. I personally haven't touched them.

Nope!

It's one of those "if you need them, you'll know beforehand" type of things.

I also didn't downloaded them, it would take time by my connection of 10kbps. The first CD is the the core for installation, the 2nd contains kde/gnome n it is also a rescue CD as well, should be usefull for those who don't have another installation of linux for trouble shooting.

But they are not that non usefull at all, only it take time to download first. For special purpose one would also need to mees around with certain packages, n find that the standard ./configuration might not satisfy his requirement, for example on might need to tweak for performance n supply the machine architect flag to ./configure for optimization in the compiler level.

Slackware used quite standard features of the original packages. So I'd say depends on the functionalities slackware should perform, some tweak of certain packages might not be omitted.

But as tweakings are advanturish n optimized according to experience combined with hearsay they doen't grant for optimum. But that doesn't make the standard solution become optimum either. Just gonna light a bit of thingies to its proper position.

---
I need to ask my friend markov first, I heard he has optimzed the discrete part of sound the driver, but that might not be of general interest, I used the same soundcard as him.
Basically static n dynamic optimization of compiler have different approachs. For the 1st characteristic option must be supply to ./configure, for the latter the optimization is on the runtime, sorry am not so deep on, not neccessary also ..

i'm sure its a ISO because if you have WINRAR it will automatically assign itself to the ISO.. it will open it as well. the sure way to find out is to burn as Image and if your burning software sees it(assuming you did this through Windoze) then its an ISO image... just that rar assigned itself to it
