Ncurse, UTF8 and locale

Hi all,

Trying to deal with weird problems I finally configured my system with fr_FR.utf8 locale.

I then noticed that ncurse borders wouldn't display correctly : x and q instead of - and | for instance.

The ncurse faq tells utf8 can be supported with correct compile options... Wich seems to be already used in slackware's original slackbuilds.

Could someone please help me to get a decent ncurse look back?

Thank you for any help!

That's strange, as Slint installers (see my sig.) heavily use the 'dialog' app (as the genuine Slackware installers) in several languages with LANG always set to an utf8 locale and that works.

Please provide a link to a simple sample or code snippet, and indicate all your locale settings: not only LANG but all LC_*.

It could be the terminal font not having the required glyphs in the expected places. Might be worth trying some of the alternatives.

Gazl is right, please tell which font you use. Of course it needs an UTF8 table. I'd suggest ter-120* for a console font, one in the DejaVu collection for a True Type one.

Ncurse, UTF8 and locale

Thanks for replies.

I will look at the font first and post back. I remember having played around with xfont...

First try might be to find default one and apply it.

If it doesn't work I'll be very greatful for help investigating the locale variables.

Thanks a lot, you were right !

Just tried to change fonts with xfontsel with -*-dejavu sans-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-15 and ncurse is back to normal.
