MySQL (mysql.sock)

Hi, it's the first time i'm using MySQL under Linux. I want to start mysql. I've tried mysql_install, mysql_install_db, but everytime i tried to start MySQL i got the following error:

----------
root@Heartbeat:/usr/bin# mysql
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
----------

How do i start a MySQL database under Slackware 10 ?

Since the server is running, take a look at my.cnf (usually located at /etc) to see what is the location of mysql socket and change it accordingly either for the server (mysqld) and the client (mysql).
