18 posts and not one person has mentioned X.org. Talk about being unsung.

Almost everyone uses it heavily and no one gives it a second thought.

Fair enough it's not strictly an application in the ususal sense of the word, but all the same.

meh... there are plenty of other shells out there. bash is a relative newcomer. Personally, I prefer ksh in many ways.

I thought about it, but then I only had one GUI only app on my list. Plus, I figured dependencies were included by default. Otherwise Qt and GTK+ would need to be on most everyone's list too.

Nobody mentioned the kernel, either.
It isn't exactly an application, but it's installed like everything else.

hehe.

I made that comment about x.org because so many vital pieces of the system tend to get overlooked, x.org is just one of them.

Anyway, getting back to what the thread is all about, and because they've not been mentioned yet... 2 apps I've found invaluable for many years and couldn't do without are
  1. sox
  2. imagemagick

In no particular order:

1. Thunberbird, for e-mail. Overall, I prefer KMail, but it still cannot properly handle HTML mail which is better than 90% of what I receive each day.
2. Kopete, for instant messaging.
3. VLC, for all things multimedia.
4. Firefox, for browsing. I've used Opera since the whole application fit on one 1.44 meg. 3 1/2" floppy, but it still, as of this date, has trouble properly displaying some web pages. Firefox does not.
5. Gwenview, for image viewing.
6. The GIMP, for image editing.
7. OpenOffice, for word processing, viewing powerpoint files, etc.
8. WINE, to run the American Heritage Electronic Dictionary.
9. Dosbox, to run an old dos database/client tracking program.
10. VirtualBox, so I can run the HP scanning software in XP since Xsane/sane can't do the job properly.
11. digikam, for retrieving photos from the camera, but really not needed for that purpose in KDE 4.2 as, I guess, it is HAL (?) that finds the camera, then opens Dolphin, and you can download the images directly to any directory you choose.
12. Adobe Acrobat, for viewing .pdf files. Okular is good, but not quite as good as Acrobat Reader.

So far it looks like Firefox, The GIMP, and OpenOffice are the most popular applications.

Not an application, if we're differentiating that applications are programs ran in some sort of shell (Xorg could be considered a "graphical shell").

Not really an application. It's more of a "server" or "graphical shell".

I don't mind splitting hairs for the sake of having a meaningful discussion, and so long as we're not splitting hairs at the subatomic level....

my favorite ten Linux apps

Here are my favorite ten Linux apps -- off the top of my head (in any order):

firefox - don't leave /home without it
dosbox - for old games
dosemu - for wordperfect 5.1+ for dos, which my dad still uses
crossover (by codeweavers.com) - for accessXP, which I still must use
ktorrent - yoho, yoho!
gqview - space/backspace makes photos navigation a breeze
ksnapshot - capture that screen!
xbindkeys - make your own ctrl-alt (or whatever) keyboard shortcuts
galculator - big calculator that can do reverse Polish notation
roxterm - can make transparent terminals
