sigh, can somebody tell me y my startx failed?
I read the book at slackware.com.... but the superprobe didn't work. so i went straight to xf86config program. after that i startx but failed:
(EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configurations
Fatal server error:
No screen found.
i have a geforce 3 ti 200 and a sumsung 17" flat monitor. i chose 1024x768 at 70hz(most 17" monitor should handle this, rite?).
or should i straight away get an nvidia driver instead?
Get the nvidia driver. You'll want it sooner or later anyway.
You should check your manual for your horizontal and vertical frequency instead of choosing one of the presets. If it aint in your manual you should look at samsungs website.
Remember to read the instrucions for the nvidia drivers.
You should have xfree86 4.x in order to use the nvidia drivers. Check so you have it before installing the drivers.

thx.....
Your startx failed because your /etc/X11/XF86Config file is incorrect. It's my experience that xf86config doesn't work properly with XFree 4.x. Try using xf86cfg instead, and if that doesn't work, try running XFree86 -configure directly. If that fails, try looking for a valid XF86Config file for the GeForce 3 Ti on the net.
I concur that you will want the NVidia drivers, but you need to get X working before you worry about that.
xf86config works fine with XFree98-4.x.x, I use it and only it to configure my X server.
Before anyone can make a "swag" about your problem you need to look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log and post the error messages.
oh it works finally.... but my usb mouse doesn't seem to work well. it stuck at the top of the screen and refues to go any where. USB mouse need extra config?

Did or did I not say "It's my experience"? I've tried using xf86config 4 or 5 times with Xfree 4.x, and never gotten a working XF86Config file. XFree86 -configure has always given me a working, though spartan config file.
Thanks for reminding me while I don't bother posting to LinuxQestions.
