My sata drive might be dying =/

Hmm,

Its happened twice now, where my SATA drive just makes a small weird sound, then i lose connectivity with it, and eventually freezes my computer.. I'm worried that it might be dying (although it shouldn't, its only about a year old)

Does anyone know any utilities that may scan the hard drive and see if its helthy or not? Its 250 gig, and filled with all my data, and im afraid i might lose everything...

Thanks

I had a similar program sometime ago with a hdd that was running very hot, try putting some cooler pointing to it and see if it happens again.
If your hard disk has SMART activated (and your BIOS supports it) it should be able to tell you it's wrong when your PC boots.

Its very cold. The hard drive itself is well designed and i've never had it heat up, even on constant read/write... And to top it off, it has a fan dedicated for it.

I do know that i have or had SMART enabled for one or more hard drives before... But i dont know if this SATA one has it or not.. I'll see about it the next time i reboot, but so far i have had no problems or error in POST regarding it.

Luckely (but not fortunatlly, as im disappointed at the lack of maxtor's linux compatibility) i still have windows on my laptop. I'll just download maxtor's *windows executable* hard disk utility, and leave it running on all night.
