my hdg suddenly won't mount

My second hard drive was working fine. suddenly after no hardware or software changes, I got this message:
Quote:
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 18
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 20
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 22
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted.
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 2
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
So...

Code:
root@mulberry:~# dmesg | tail
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 18
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 20
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 22
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted.
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 0
FAT: unable to read boot sector
end_request: I/O error, dev 22:01 (hdg), sector 2
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
I don't like the looks of this. Is there anything I can do?

Ouch, looks like a hardware failure. However, replacing the IDE cable is worth a try. Several times, I've seen systems seem to have IDE cables fail, though I have no idea how that happens.

Give a disk diagnosis utility a shot. Your hard drive's manufacturer usually provides one or two on their website. Failing that, the Utimate Boot CD has about a dozen of them for various manufacturers (among many other things). Better to know a little more certainly before you start replacing components.

Yes, also look into smartmontools for drive monitoring and statuses.

This was an old issue that I fixed, but now its back and I don't remember how I fixed it. I recall trying something in the shell and it gave me an error message. I don't remember the message but it suggested a command with some switches. I'm pretty sure it was using the e2fsck command. Whatever the switches were, they worked like a charm. I'm sorry this is so vague. Any help would be awesome.
