Also change your resolution an default depth in /etc/X11/xorg.conf Example:
# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes
# the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section
# may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"
# option.
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "** Intel i810 (generic) [i810]"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24 #<-----------H-E-R-E-------------------------

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1600x1200"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24 #<-----------H-E-R-E-------------------------
Modes "1600x1200" #<-----------H-E-R-E-------------------------
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

Talking Gurus?

The gurus don't concern themselves with problems such as yours (or mine). They're all writing code at the command prompt! Maybe an answer from a mere mortal would do.

I've had a rummage around, and dug up these posts from google. You may, or may not have, already read them, but I like to be complete =)

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel.../msg00076.html
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/arch...hp/t-7749.html
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=319133
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=133605

I use nvidia cards, so, I can't help a lot beyond to point out a few things you may not have been made aware of. For that, I'm sorry.

Quote:
I think the key is getting DRI Project driver modules installed and loaded, but I have no idea how to do this, and the DRI Project website isn't very helpful.
Video driver:
Xorg comes with the radeon video driver, which mean you do not need to install anything else on top of X. Once you've got X installed (as I know you have) then it is only a matter of tweaking xorg.conf to make it work.

My understanding of the Xorg/Xfree "built-in" drivers, such as yours, is that they're not as functionally good as drivers by the graphics vendors. This stands to reason since the vendors have schematics and driver plans for their cards, while those working on X drivers have to hack a lot to get things working. This will account for discrepancies between your 'doze and *nix installs.

So, in direct response to the quote: the DRI Project is integrated into Xorg, so you will already have the drivers from there, no need to install them again (probably!).

Quote:
I've tried all of your suggestions and I still can't get DivX video to play properly, or 3D acceleration to run properly. And I've also pretty much given up on Samba server. At least the client works fine...
What are you using for playback? I recommend mplayer, and using the Xv driver to play the video, thus:

Code:
~# mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa /my/divx/file.avi
If you're using xine, then you need to make sure you've set the video driver to something sensible. If memory serves I think you want xshm, but best not to quote me on that, I use mplayer =)

Samba

Setting up Samba and using it is very well covered in the O'Reilly book `Using Samba'. Fully viewable on the web. I strongly urge you to have a look a this and then in all propability you will be up and running very soon.

If not write back listing your smb.conf and Windows options you have. As a quick thought have you created your samba user, type:

man smbpasswd

and is `encrypt passwords = yes' in your smb.conf.

Good luck.

ati radeon card

I have the 32Mb version of ur card. Using knoppix live cd for its X11 config file I use ati driver. Under /etc/X11/xorg.conf's Section Monitor u can insert Hz + Vt refresh rates values for ur display and add Option "DPMS" "true" ;and in Section "Device" describing ati card u can uncomment or add VideoRam 65536kb. Good luck and have fun.

  1. Use "hosts" file to define names
  2. NetBIOS over TCP/IP broadcasts
  3. Domain Name Service (DNS)
  4. Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)

Most people don't have a DNS server, or a WINS server running on their home network. That leaves either the "hosts" file or NetBIOS broadcasts over TCP/IP. If you are having problems, I recommend starting by defining the computer names and IP addresses in the "hosts" file on both computers.

If you can get that working, then the next step is to use NetBIOS broadcasts instead of the "hosts" file. Remove or comment out the computer names in the hosts file to test NetBIOS name resolution.

There is a setting in the Windows LAN Connection TCP/IP properties to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. The setting is on the "WINS" page in the settings you get by clicking the "Advanced" button. If you don't have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, then computers cannot use NetBIOS broadcasts to resolve names.

If NetBIOS is not working properly on Linux, you also may have problems. I'm not sure how to configure or test NetBIOS on Linux.

Some routers or other devices may block broadcasts. That can interfere with NetBIOS name resolution.

You can use a Domain Name Server to resolve addresses for Microsoft Networking, but you have to make sure all the computers register their names with the Domain Name Server. Either that, or you have to enter the information in the name server database manually.

I'm not sure if Linux supports WINS, and there is really no point in using it instead of DNS unless you have older versions of Windows. You also need a Windows server to support WINS.

Windows does not need name resolution in order to file/print share. It works just fine using IP addresses.

Although assuming you did want to have name to IP resolution the above post is accurate.

I tweaked the xorg.conf file with a few of the settings you folks recommended and still didn't change much for me...

Output of glxgears:
Code:

I hope all this info helps. As for my media player I am using Noatun, which is the Slackware 10.2 default.

Question is, will the player program continue to use the framebuffer, unless otherwise configured?

hi

check your /etc/fstab file. do you see there this line:

shm /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

if no then add it. for that you must allso have a kernel support for POSIX, but that is by default so, i belive.

As OSDiplomat has said: have you tried adjusting the settings in Noatun? It sounds like a KDE default more than a Slackware default ...

Are you using the standard Slackware kernel?

Reason I ask is, perhaps something in there isn't set up to accurately represent your hardware, so things aren't working.

I find it hard to diagnose problems remotely, and I don't know enough about X, drm, dri and glx to really make sense of the logs.

Oh! Logs!

/var/log/xorg.0.log (it's that or very similar, it's definitly in /var/log tho')

If you could put it up that might be handy. We'll see what X is saying when it starts up =)

root@Die_Maschine:~# glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No <<<< thats the problem

your not loading dri so your radeon generic driver if its capable of being used by dri isnt using hardware acceleration. so you got it in but you havent turned it on.

at the bottom of your xorg.conf file you need to uncomment the DRI section.

excuse me. i forgot to say that you have to mount POSIX after adding that line in fstab. so 'mount /dev/shm' , and then grep ' mount | grep "shm"' to see if it is mounted properly. output should look like ' tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)'. try glxgears and fgl_glxgears after doing this.

Xorg.o.log is too long for me to post, but I did review it and it seems that X is loading the DRI module, but further down the line it says direct rendering is disabled...
