Ok here is the deal I have MSN broadband (Yeah yeah I know lets not go the reok? Only thing available.) Anyhow I have this MSN DSL 1000 modem made by Arescom(who by the way have jack on their site about this modem), well the proble is I don't have an etherned adapter to plug it into(no I can't just go buy one, nevermind why I just can't), this modem has USB though. It works in windows just fine, no problems. (interestingly enough win98 detected and isntalled it fine XP did not I had to install the software). I know that it is possible to get bradband internet conenction through USB, although the performance is less then stellar, in linux. I managed to some how with the help of 5 other people get comcast cable working with the old RCA 235 cablemodem, via USB. It was done with modifying a bunch of files(how I couldn't tell you it was years ago) and then adding two LONG commands, and a modeprobe eth0. That got me online. Thats the extent of the info I can give about how it was done with cable. I had to download hotplugs too. I was running slack 8. I have slack9 now, which came with hotplugs and I told it YES please do install them in the installation/setup screens. So those are here. I don't have DNS numbers because those dolts at MSN refuse to give me any, because their software doesn't need the dns numbers it's all built in. HRUMPH HOOEY I say. Anyway. We all know M$ is full of chumps but that isn't what this is about. When I modprobe eth0 on this it's like it goes through fine but there is no ethernet adapter only this modem through usb. When I modprobe eth1 or eth2 or any others it throws errors and a fit about me being stupid because there ain't nothing there. Well paint me red, but as I recall eth0 should be an ethernet adapter to which there isn't. How this has ben explained to me is it's the usb on the dsl modem. Ok so why ain't it working? Everything is supposed tobe dynamic so I left it alone. I get told it should be working. I don't buy it. Anyone have any idea's? I would really like to scrap windows here and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO close to being able to do so. The hurdle is getting this broadband working with USB. If I can do that I can tell M$ what to do with it's O/S. WOOHOO that'd be great yeah? Anyhow please keep in mind my experience with linux is VERy limited and you'll have to explain it in plain english. I can barely manage to install a program right now, and install kernel modules from KDE, but I am nowhere near being able to install a driver and have it work I wouldn't know where to begin. On a high note though I finally know how to quit a man page and what the heck chmod is for and how to useit. I know it's sad but when you have no way of knowing these things or how and why things are the way they are or even that they are it kinda makes sense. Anyhow if anyone can give me a hand I'd be much obliged. fantacmet@msn.com is my direct e-mail if anyone wants to e-mail me directly. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to muster.
I did a bit of looking in this matter before i chose which modem to get, even made a nice thread for recommendations on what and what not to do/get.
They all told me that its very irritating and hard if not mind bogling to get your adsl working over USB... The best bet is to get it working through the Ethernet port (pppoe).
Either get an Ethernet ADSL Modem, or a Router, which is basically a modem and a switch in one box.
But the thing is, you already have this usb modem.. so the best bet is to wait for someone who knows how to make it work, or to look for tutorials somewhere. (try searching LQ with keywords 'adsl usb')
I've been looking around. I'd love to get this thing working in ethernet which would be easy, I did it with my neighbor's DSL, and linux. Problem is I don't have an ethernet adapter or the money to get one. I have no money at all the only reason I'm able to keep my dsl right now is because they screwed up and now owe me a few months free. YAY me. See what happens when they screw up and you yell at them? Yeah read howto's, I do think this modem sucks but they gotta cut their losses by giving the customer crap. Sadly enough, the original modem they had shipped, which never got here was an actiontec wireless gateway with a nice hub. My neibhgor has one, it works GREAT. AWESOME with linux. Oh well.
I've got that modem and MSN DSL.. Please help me. I'm hooked to an Intel 10/1000 built in network card. I love it in Windows wich I will always use as I'm a dedicated gamer but I'm very Linux curious having just installed my first mandrake 10 distro.. cool.. installed great.. it even wanted to install on my raid array.. cool. Please email me with any suggestions. I don't know how to set up the net in linux with MSN DSL. Get me at cowboykeith09@msn.com
