Well the only way I see to get around this is to use su -c "gmplayer -vo xv" to open gmplayer. I would REALLY like to make this work right without the need for it to be run in super user but no one seems to have an idea. I searched google and people have had this exact problem before but I can't read the webpage because it is either written in chinese or german

I have the latest version of mplayer.
gmplayer has never worked since I installed this version, although mplayer without gui works well

gmplayer error first asked for another skin directory in /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/default, so I gave it /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/default/skin, and put a skin in that dir.

Now it shows (as user): vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)
Linux RTC init error in ioctl (rtc_irqp_set 1024): Permission denied
Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts.
So I did that, no change, still doesn't work.
Gkrellm shows cpu running 99%.
gmplayer has never run as root in my system.

I've re-installed slack10 3 times since I first noticed this (for another reason), and the behaviour is consistent.

I assume this is a bug in mplayer, and given the arrogance of the creators of mplayer, will just have to wait 'til they condescend to fix it.

Just as a test, try " gmplayer -nosound " and see what happens.

IF ok, try:
gmplayer -ao help

This will give a list of available audio outputs.
Code:
Available audio output drivers:
        mpegpes Mpeg-PES audio output
        oss OSS/ioctl audio output
        alsa ALSA-0.9.x-1.x audio output
        arts aRts audio output
        esd EsounD audio output
        sdl SDLlib audio output
        null Null audio output
pcm RAW PCM/WAVE file writer audio output
        plugin Plugin audio output
Try each one, and test the results (yes... the old trial and error method )

example: gmplayer -vo xv -ao esd
(since apparently you need the -vo xv too)

Hope I'm not telling you something you already tried.

p.s. I decided to do some experimenting while I'm waiting for something.
These worked for me:
gmplayer -ao arts -af volume
gmplayer -ao sdl
gmplayer -au oss
&
gmplayer -au pcm -af volume (but the movie went 2x speed with no sound - crazy!)

gmplayer -nosound didn't help. It didnt even start playing the file before it threw the viewing screen up into the top left of myscreen where I can only see about 1/3 of the picture let alone close it.

Any other ideas or should I just reinstall mplayer? I can still use regular mplayer just fine and I believe I'm alright with that but I would prefer the capability if I wanted to use gmplayer.

hi there,

if i understand correct, all works for root, but not fo user....yes?
why not try to delete/rename some files, ( or the whole dir. ) from ~/.mplayer...?
and see what it does....

the error must be somewhere there i think...

Actually I received a very helpful e-mail from Xavier Chapa. Here's how I got it to work for me:

Go to preferences, then click the Audio tab, then select sdl, click on configure driver, then select the sound driver you are using. For me it was alsa.
You should also check the driver settings for your selected driver in the audio tab and make sure the paths are correct.

On a side note I appologize Xavier Chapa but I seem to be having problems with my smtp server as far as connecting to it. So I'll just say on here thank you very much for helping me out and thank you to all the others of this forum who helped go through the usual problems and figuring out what was wrong. I love this forum. It may take a little bit but eventually someone has a solution to your problem . A great big thank you one more time to Xavier Chapa.
