mplayer not responding after use of slackpkg

Today I upgraded the install i made of slack14 (just 2 days ago) using the slackpkg tool.

Ever since, mplayer is seemingly not able to read and open a commercial DVD.

Last night it worked fine.

thx for any help,
Tex

This is a question that would have been better posted in the Slackware forum.

Official Slackware does not include libdvdcss for copyright infringement reasons. You can obtain a package from:
http://slackware.org.uk/people/alien...lds/libdvdcss/
or
http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/pe...lds/libdvdcss/

I just wonder why hired (commercial) DVDs played the moment i got a GUI yesterday; the moment *after* upgrade, i couldn't get mplayer to play one.

So, my point: in the slackware64-bit 14.0 version, straight out of install, mplayer played hired movies;
the upgrade process effectively resulted in disabling it. (??)

Anyway, I shall look to the various fora for a solution nexta time,

cheers,
Texta

You could consider building your own MPlayer from svn, you will not only get a more recent version but MPlayer incorporates libdvdcss into its source tree.

i was wondering, which repository did you use on your /etc/slackpkg/mirror ?
Often, people use -Current instead of -Stable mirror

Thanks for excellent suggestion.
As soon as I've finished some reading I will do just that!
At mo, I'm still trying to figure out the most basic things about linux....

Cheers,
Tex

Hey Willy,
This is the one which I have uncommented:

ftp://ftp.cc.swin.edu.au/slackware/slackware64-14.0/

Look alright?

thx for your response,

well, thx for looking, but i assure you!
I have done it twice now: over 3 installs: each time mplayer worked "out of the box"; each time it stopped working once I had updated/ upgraded

Can you run mplayer in a terminal for a more verbose output (at least more verbose than opening it in a gui)?

Thanks Tommy:

here it is:

Code:
bash-4.2$ mplayer dvd://spooks
MPlayer 1.1-4.7.1 (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team

Playing dvd://spooks.
The hostname option must be an integer: spooks
Struct dvd, field hostname parsing error: spooks
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Could not open input: Permission denied
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (Permission denied)
No stream found to handle url dvd://spooks

Exiting... (End of file)
bash-4.2$
I'm very new at all this: linux new-born; slack-enthralled like a baby with a overly-sophisticated toy ...
Be that as it may, I'm determined to hold off from slinking back to Mint or Ubuntu and have entirely burned my bridges back to that other OS.

cheers,
Tex

Great suggestion Andrew~!

Will definitely have to do this.

At the moment, I'm still reading all the tutes and notes to get myself acquainted with linux and slack to a basic level before I start messing with tar balls!

cheers,
Tex

I think that there should be a number after "dvd://", which tells mplayer the dvd title to open. If you run it as "mplayer dvd://" or "mplayer dvd://1", does it work?

Or even:

Code:
mplayer -mouse-movements -nocache dvdnav://

Thanks for this Daintre: here is output to,

mplayer dvd://1

which is rather verbose I'm afraid:

Code:
bash-4.2# mplayer dvd://1
Creating config file: /root/.mplayer/config
MPlayer 1.1-4.7.1 (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team

Playing dvd://1.
