mplayer's /usr/local/lib/codecs work... but what of ffmpeg?

I have MPlayer compiled/installed on my system with the newest codecs packages from the site, as well as tgz packages from linuxpackages for flac divx lame ogg etc.. I also have ffmpeg installed this way (0.4.9). All my codecs are in /usr/local/lib/codecs with the exception of the divx ffmpeg flac and lame codecs which i assume the package scripts put in the right place automatically.

The problem is with flac files played in mplayer... i get a 'requested audio codec family (afm=ffmpeg) not available/ Enable it at compilation'

I have compiled and recompiled the program and it runs well.. i can play every format under the sun, but flac is still not working.
Does flac not have its own codec? I did intall teh tgz for flac 1.1.1, and the flac program is there. So why can Mplayer not play it, and why does it ask for ffmpeg?
And ffmpeg is there as well, I installed the tgz for version 0.4.9, and i can access the standalone program, so why does MPLayer not see them?
Are there specific files I need to move, perhaps to /usr/local/lib/codecs, or am I to pass options upon compilation?
and please dont 'rtfm damn noob' me(I have heard horror stories), I have been using slackware for quite some time, and much of it at cli, so I am somewhat knowledgeable.

it's hard to determine what flags it was compiled with by a third party.
i'd suggest compiling it yourself. also, pay close attention to the configure
portion of mplayer...it should give you a clue as to what it needs but
cannot find on your system.
