mp3's have noise/static in the background

Hello everyone
I'm posting because i have the following problem.. When i play mp3's (with any program: xmms, juk, play, aplay) i get a lot of noise in the background. It's mostly audible at the beginning or the end of a song, or at quiet moments. I'm using slackware 10.1 updated to current, with alsa drivers 1.0.9b. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a possible fix for it?
Ohw btw, in windows, on the same computer, i'm not getting any noise. My soundcard is a Hercules Muse LT world with c-media 8738 chip.

I had a similar problem when I updated my kernel to 2.6. I cannot answer your question as to why it happens, but I did find a fix. I just fired up alsamixer, and adjusted the settings until it went away. That seemed to fix it, but then again that isn't really a solution.

It's possible that your microphone input is unmuted. Turn the volume down and mute it in alsamixer, turn off the +20db boost as well. Even if you have no mike plugged in it still often causes background noise.

Some channels that are 100% open cold be the cause; try lowering. Actually on my SB Live! I have to mute the AC97 channel to get a clear sound.
