I came here with a very similar problem-- actually, the same problem. I guess the big question on my end is-- how come the configuration setup offers the same options for the mouse and the modem-- and is it a matter of critical importance NOT to have both the mose and the modem pointed at "COM1" or "COM2" respectively? ( I hadn't ever thought of a mouse as a communication-device before... except for maybe in a surreal sense.)
