Mouse hangs while logging off/shutdown and Some ports are open

My problem is that when i try to shutdown or logoff from KDE the mouse ppointer doesn't move and the entire system hangs. So i am unable to shutdown my system in a proper way. Moreover what is gpm? They say that gpm allows you to copy from console and they also say that gpm sometimes leads to hanging problems in X.I have disabled gpm(i.e during installation when they asked that do you want gpm to start on startup i said no).strange though that i can still copy using mouse from the konsole(in X)? How so?
Moreover Nmap shows the following result:
Starting Nmap 4.11 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2007-03-30 21:31 IST
Interesting ports on einsam.localdomain (127.0.0.1):
Not shown: 1679 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
6000/tcp open X11
Device type: general purpose
Running: Linux 2.4.X|2.5.X
OS details: Linux 2.4.0 - 2.5.20
Uptime 0.002 days (since Fri Mar 30 21:28:30 2007)

Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 2.121 seconds

can anyone tell what is the function of this port 6000 and also clarify its security implications.
Is it necessary that when i am running X this port will always open up?
Can this be disabled ?
Kindly Help

Port 6000 is for X to receive incoming connections (it is seldom used). To disable it add '-nolisten tcp' to /usr/bin/startx to the serverargs="" part (between the quotation marks).

Konsole is inside X (and is not to be confused with the normal linux console), while GPM is connected to the _real_ console. You've said that you've disabled it, so that shouldn't be the problem. Try different mouse drivers (auto, IMPS/2, etc.) in xorg.conf
( Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" etc, at the Section "InputDevice" part). Also take a look at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages after you've rebooted (after the crash).

PS.: Does Ctrl+Alt+Backspace do anything when you computer crashes?
