Mouse and network Problems.

Okay, so this is my first dealings with linux ever and i am enjoying it but have come aacross a few problems i havn't been able to take care of.

First i cant get onto the network at my college. I think i neeed to define my 10/100 nework card but i dont know how. I ran "netsetup"(was yesterday night dont know if that was the exact name) and follwed thaqt through and got nothing. I know our network is DHCP. I have a dell inspiron 9400 dont know exactly what network card i have.

Second i cant get my moouse to work. I have a usb mouse (intellipoint 3.0) and the touchpad from a laptop. When i orginally installed i told it usb but neither worked. I then switched it to ps2 and now the touchpad works, but i would appreciate if anybody knew how to make them both work.

Sorry if thats not the clearest, I just woke up. I will be around to answer questions on it. Thnaks for the help in advance.

P.S. one more quick after thought question, in X i cant change my resolution to 1440x900 is that because i havnt installed the nvidia drivers yet since i cant download them, or is there something i have to manually edit in X?

Welcome to Slackware linux!

For the network card, it probably is already set up. To check, open up a terminal/konsole and type "su" and then enter the root/administrator password. This way you become the root user. Then type "ifconfig". You should see two or three listings of network interfaces. Usually your ethernet card is called eth0. If it is not listed there, try to bring it up with "ifconfig eth0 up". If you can see it now, look to see if there is an ip address listed. If not, request one with "dhcpcd eth0".

For the mouse, you can edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Insert the following in the InputDevice Section:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "USBMouse"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons" "off"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
and in the server layout section add the line:

Code:
InputDevice "USBMouse" "SendCoreEvents"
Then both usb and touchpad should work.

On the graphics question, try the "nv" driver packaged with X. Look in the graphics device section of the xorg.conf file and you will see where the Device set up is. Try to figure it out, and if you can't, post another question.

Ok, college has been keeping me rather busy, but i was finally able to get in and set a few things up. I got both the network card and mouse working.

Now the res, im not sure where to start, i looked in the xorg.conf and didnt see anything. I then looked online and everythins seems to point to the XF86Config. I however can not find it. Someone want to point my in the right direction, and ill see if i can figure out how to change the resolution?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Look in xorg.conf. In the Screen section there are Display subsections which list the various resolutions in the Modes directive. Edit the one corresponding to your Default Depth.

XF86Conf is what xorg.conf used to be called.

i installed rc5 the other day and had the same issues. when i started X I had no mouse functions at all. i also noticed that eth0 was missing. i didnt have time to poke around too much so i cant really say how to resolve it, but now that 11 is out im hoping this has been fixed.
