In order to play a dvd movie you probably need libdvdcss which decrypts it (available from linuxpackages.net). You don't need to mount it. That's for data dvds/cds. Gxine is the browser plugin for xine, so try using xine first. You might also want to try adding yourself to some groups. Type 'groups' in a terminal to find out which groups you currently belong to. You probably need to be in audio, video and cdrom. If you're not in any of these groups then add yourself by editing /etc/group.
You will need to be root to install this - cd to the download location and do 'installpkg libdvdcss.xxx.tgz' in a terminal.
Next run gxine and look in file - configure - preferences - media - dvd and make sure that the device is pointing to the correct device. IE from what you have said above it should be /dev/dvd
Now click - file - dvd and see if it works.
Slackware tends to need some manual tweaking to get things working. It's a lot different to some distros that do it all for you. This is the attraction for some of us who like to have more control over what's going on in their system.
i have a question about this ^. i see browse, read, write in the permisions but i don't see execute. could that have been a problem too? sorry, just curious and testing my own knowledge. i am glad you got your problem fixed.
slacky needs to load some library to load and navigate through DVD contents (i can remember: libdvd and libdvdnav). after that, slack needs to have a player (such as gxine, xine, kaffeine) to play. your installation must be missing one (or more) of them. i just recently installed slacky 11.0 and DVD works fine. thank god, everything works fine. except for DXI, in which i don't have the necessery graphics card. heh.
