modules.conf empty?

I just updated KDE to 3.2.3 and all of a sudden my sound doesnt work. I tried to run alsamixer to make sure the volume wasnt off and that didnt work. I also ran across something that mentioned the /etc/modules.conf file so I went to check it out and it is empty (0K). Is this supposed to be like this? Is this why my sound doesnt work?

Did you upgrade just kde or all of slack. I just updated all of slack 2 times within a week (cuz there were 2 updates within that time frame) and both times I lost my sound. try downloading and installing the latest alsa version. Thats what I did and it fixed my lost sound.

The output in /etc/modules.conf is generated by alsaconf. You ran alsamixer, did you run alsaconf? After updating kde, how is the sound setup in your kde settings?

I think modules.conf is for kernel 2.4.xx and modprobe.conf for 2.6.xx, so if you have a 2.6 kernel it is normal that modules.conf is empty.

modprobe.conf and modules.conf are 2 seperate things.

from the man files:
modprobe.conf -- Configuration file for modprobe
modules.conf - configuration file for loading kernel modules

modules.conf comes blank from setup in slack, that is normal.

Well sometimes practice is better than theory, you said that modprobe.conf and modules.conf are 2 seperate things but in reality, these files has the same syntax and both are supposed to work with modprobe to ajust modules parameters.

In 2.6 as far I know, modules.conf is inused.

Sorry it took too long to respond. I've been away all weekend. Anyway, heres what I've done with your suggestions and more info:

1) I ran alsaconf and it detected everything fine and filled in my modules.conf file. No sound still.
2) I am running kernal 2.4.26 as an FYI.
3) I lost my sound after just updating KDE.
4) Here is how my sound is set up:
-Under KDEs sound system configure screen under gerneral Enable Sound System is checked off
-Under the Hardware tab, it is set to autodetect and all other check boxes are not checked.
5) My ALSA packages are at 0.9.8. I noticed at alsa-project that there is one that is more up to date but I found no Slackware packages. Should I just uninstall my alsa packages and compile the new ones?

Let me know if you have any ideas or need any more info.

Matt
