module dependancies

I have a few questions:

When i start up slack 7, near the end of the boot it says modprobe : not an ELF executable
then it scrolls through about 10 modules saying

/path/to/module : undefined symbol : _xstat

I dont think i need any of them anyway, so i could just comment them out the script file right?

Also when trying to start winesetup it says

error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 undefined symbol : _xstat (it also does this for a few others). Do i need to upgrade these files? what does the undefined symbol thing mean?

(this happens for anything which tries to access this file (which is a symbolic link to *.6.1 or something, but when i replaced it with the actual libX11.so.6 it just says file not found. (i have tried doing ldconfig after it, but it replaces the file with a symb link)
