You don't need every package in the X set, but there are so many of them that it is rather difficult to go through them and pick and chose.

I use the following setup for the x-series. Remember to install a driver for your video separatly.

Note that you don't need int10 -- I only enabled it just now to test my video card driver.

NB,
freetype support for True Type (ttf, ttc), Type1 (pfa, pfb), CID (cid), CFF, Open Type, bitmap (bdf, pcf, snf), Windows (fnt), PFR, and Type42 fonts. As you can see, freetype provides everything provided by type1, speedo, & bitmap module. So you don't need them.
