Mobility Radeon 7000, X.org 6.7.0 and DRI

Using Slackware 10 generic install and later installing the Linux 2.6.7 from the /testing directory, I went about configuring X for the Mobility Radeon 7000.

I knew fglrx wouldn't work on Laptops so I had to use x.org's "radeon" driver via xorgconfig.

I also knew I had to enable "dri" so I added the dri group at the bottom of the xorg.conf file. I startx and run glxgears and there's no change in fps, still giving me 180 and tuxracer is slow as hell. Does anyone have a similar setup that they have working and can they please post it up? Thanks.

After you startx, run lsmod and see if the radeon module loaded. The kernel module is what will provide the direct rendering.

Other things to check:

see if agpgart is detecting your agp chipset correctly -- look through dmesg for mentions of this, you may also have to modprobe agpgart.

See if your xorg.conf contains
Load "dri"
Load "glx"
Load "glcore"
(i'm fuzzy on this last one)

Make sure you have this section somewhere in your xorg.conf
Code:
Section "dri"
Mode 0666
EndSection
As is, check /var/log/Xorg.log.0 for errors.

By the way -- fglrx does indeed work on laptops, but I don't think it works for the 7000. I'm running fglrx on my sony vaio laptop with a 9200 mobility.
