mobile broadband on slack

i installed slackware on my laptop last night, :-) very happy. Can't wait to learn more about linux and even computers in general. I've already learnt heaps since entering the alternative operating system world. Anyways, i've got xfce up and running with slack now, created a new user 4 my self. And now i'd like to get some updates and stuff, but i need to use my mobile broadband. It's a telsta dongle If that changes the circumstances. How would i go about setting this up?

Do you actually mean a Telstra dongle?
Telstra is an Australian telco. They provide various makes and models of USB modems.
To find the details of your device, please post the output of 'lsusb' after you have plugged the device.
It is likely that the device is already supported by Slackware using 'usb-modeswitch'. You will likely need to configure pppd (or the kppp GUI frontend) to access the Telstra network.

The good news is that your device is supported by usb-modeswitch. There is an entry in /etc/usb-modeswitch.d/19d2:0053 that matches your 19d2:0031 device identification.

The not so good news is that I have no personal experience with your device. However my googling suggests that you should be able to use the pppd command and chat script that I posted http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...4/#post4213848 with a minor alteration.

Telstra uses 'telstra.internet' as the APN, so change to that in place of 'preconnect'

You may need to experiment with the device name in the pppd command. My device uses /dev/ttyUSB0, but you may need to use /dev/ttyUSB1 or /dev/ttyUSB2.

Good luck with this!

If my solution fails, you could look at sakis3g or wvdial.

You could install network manager from: http://connie.slackware.com/~rworkma...packages/i486/ and let it handle all the arcane stuff in the background.

Yes, I am old fashioned. I also do not see the OPs device listed as supported by NetworkManager here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetworkManager

Hi:

For what it is worth, I used kppp to setup my mobile modem here in Canada.

See Denis-Carl Robidoux's response to my post: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-modem-773492/

I guess you will need info specific to *your* modem but his post is probably a good starting point.

Hope this helps,
