mixer??
 

Doesn't slackware come with a command line mixer built in?? Getting sick of gnome and going to use fluxbox for a little while. Last time i used fluxbox i was using alsa and had amixer that came along with alsa. I recently bought a new sound card and using kernel drivers. So looking for a mixer, but could of sworn that slack came with one. I guess i could just use the gnome volume control. But was just wonderng.

The command line version in Redhat is aumix. If you don't have it, downloading and installing shouldn't take a lot of time.

rexima is what you are looking for. It's amixer spelled backwards.
If it's not installed don't freat. Just mount the slackware cd or nfs share and cd to slackware/ap and as root run:
/sbin/installpkg rexima-1.2-i386-1.tgz

ahhh, that is it...rexima. I remember stumbling upon it a while ago. I havent downloaded anything since the volume is actually set pretty good on default, can just adjust my speakers.

I use kmix or kmixer(cant remember the name:)) even when I'm in fluxbox.

I thought aumix was gui? I mean that's what I use in blackbox and its a menu option with a small gui...unless its both and I never saw it?

Well, it is a text based GUI designed to run in a console. I would normally grab a screenshot at this point, but don't know if we can post any. :)

Might be a mandrake thing then?...because the aumix I installed through URPMI brings up a gui...not in the console...but an honest to god gui (kinda like Kmix, but less fancy...).

Weird...now I can't wait to go home, run in init 3 and try aumix see what happens hehe...

What exactly is a mixer?
I have a Dell X200 and rite now I have no sound. I'm using XMMS and when I click to play an MP3 the equalizer works but no sound comes up. I have configured it to be OSS, /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer
and also did a chmod 777 for /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer

It is simply the software that controls the sound card, accepting all channels (outside input, PCM (xmms), microphone, CD, etc...) and
mixes them all together for output, mono, stereo, quad, etc depending on your card. If you want to, you can mix XMMS, with CD with radio and hear all three together.

I don't know slackware enough to be able to help, but I would suggest you go back to first principles and use the help on the web at slackware (assuming that is your distro due to your handle and the thread location) to get your sound configured. Sounds to me like you simply don' t have it configured for your sound card. Do you get any sound any time? What type of card? All the usual stuff required. :)

If you type in aumix in a console, it brings up the nurses controls, and if you type it in a "run box" or something, it brings up the GUI.

Its very versatle. :D
