Mixed results with sound

I can pop an audio cd in the drive and play it fine using KsCD. I can't however open xmms and listen to an ogg file from the hard drive. It's playing, I can see that, but no sound.

Neither will xmms play any sounds from, for instance, /opt/kde/share/sounds. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

regards,

right click xmms > options > preferences, change the audio plugin

It's very poor quality though, muffled and crackly.
