I have a vague feeling this belongs to Gnome 1. I have often had the same error when compiling old programs and I never solved it. However, I found a gnomeConf.sh in /usr/local/lib although I have a vague recollection of putting it there from somewhere in order to try and get those programs compiled. Here is what is in it:

#
# Configuration of the gnome-libs package
#

GNOME_LIBDIR=""
GNOME_INCLUDEDIR="-I/usr/include/gnome-1.0 -DNEED_GNOMESUPPORT_H -I/usr/lib/gnome-libs/include -I/usr/include/gtk-1.2 -I/usr/include/glib-1.2 -I/usr/lib/glib/include -I/usr/X11R6/include"
GNOME_LIBS="-lgnome -lgnomesupport -lesd -laudiofile -lm -laudiofile -lm -ldb1 -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lglib "
GNOMEUI_LIBS="-lgnomeui -lart_lgpl -lgdk_imlib -ljpeg -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk -lgdk -rdynamic -lgmodule -lglib -ldl -lXi -lXext -lX11 -lm -lSM -lICE -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk -lgdk -rdynamic -lgmodule -lglib -ldl -lXi -lXext -lX11 -lm -lgnome -lgnomesupport -lesd -laudiofile -lm -laudiofile -lm -ldb1 -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lglib "
GTKXMHTML_LIBS="-lgtkxmhtml -lXpm -ljpeg -lpng -lz -lz -lSM -lICE -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk -lgdk -rdynamic -lgmodule -lglib -ldl -lXi -lXext -lX11 -lm"

need_gnome_support="yes"

There is no gnomeConf.sh in my /var/log/packages/libgnome-2.6.
