Missing Dependencies?

OK. I'm used to using RedHat which is bloated and I didn't want to install that on my small laptop, so I installed Slackware 9.1 (I think it was 9.1, but I may have labeled the disk wrong). I installed all of the packages on the CD (I think). Now I am trying to re-compile the kernel using 2.4.22, so I downloaded the 2.4.22 source and untarred it like I normally would and when I did "make menuconfig" it said that I didn't have ncurses installed. My question is this: After a fresh install, do you normally have to download a bunch of extra (necessary) packages just to recompile the kernel? Or did I mess up the install?

9.1 is 2 discs. Perhaps you did not install the full set?

ncurses should have been installed, originally by default. did you do a "full" install?? by that I mean all packages.

I may have only got 1 of the 2 disks (or I just got 9.0). Anyway, I select the "full" installation, which would lead me to believe that it installed everything in every package I selected. I'm pretty sure I selected every package except Gnome but I could be wrong. Would it give me an error if the disk was scratched up? I would think so.

i also have this problem yet i know i have ncurses installed, however i think i need ncurses-dev installed (which i cannot find on the discs or even on swaret etc). I've searched the slackware site and the web for ncurses-dev and it appears the only file i can get is the ncurses-dev RPM (which when i do rpm2tgz then installpkg, does not install any files).

this is odd as i have had slackware running (same cd's, same version etc) before with the full install and it worked fine, yet i decided to reinstall with a small system (no X etc) and make menuconfig now moans....

anyone give any tips? i beleive i would need to run ldconfig, which i have done (is that neccasary? as far as im aware it is), still no joy!
