Missing audacity effects

I finally got audacity 1.3.5 installed (all slack pkgs) on slack 12.1 and it seems to be working pretty well or as well as I can tell, being rank newb to aucacity. But, the main function I want it for, to change pitch so I can slow down songs and pick out the notes, is missing from the effects menu. As I understand it, there are supposed to be a change speed, change tempo, and change pitch effect. I see only change speed. According to a web page I found:

"The solution to this problem is to add a build dependency "libsoundtouch-dev""

So, I found and installed the soundtouch-1.3.1-i486-2as.tgz, from the Slacky.eu 12.1 repos, which says it's:

"SoundTouch is an open-source audio processing library for changing
the Tempo, Pitch and Playback Rates of audio streams or file."

It resides primarily in the /usr/include dirs. I fired up audacity after installing the soundtouch pkg, but nada. Still no tempo or pitch effects shown on the menu. I'm starting to beat a head-high hole in the wall.

Has anyone else been successful in getting audacity to run on 12.1 with pitch and tempo effects?

You have to recompile audacity with '--with-soundtouch' set. There are good build-scripts for both audacity and soundtouch over at slackbuilds.org. However, you will have to change the script there too to enable soundtouch-based effects.
