Has anyone tried a minimal Slackware install? NO X,KDE or Gnome.

Worked great, however I am fairly familiar with the command line stuff I do, so no problems here....

I'm running a P2/300mhz CPU and it seems the more programs I compile from source the better Slack runs. I've become fairly adept at vi and mc so I thought it would make a good project. Any heads-up you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Slightly more work, I'd suggest looking into "slackware-current". You can get gcc-3.2 which would put you nearer the "latest and greatest" capabilities. Short of that I'd say...

I'd just make sure you get everything in the 'd' directory. Everything else will require at least those programs. I'd also suggest you throw on the necessary tools to get your network up, however you do that now. From there, you've sorta got an LFS going, and can get started on compiling

Libs you might also want to include, however, if you are getting all the apps off the web, then libs can probably be gotten and compiled as well; this will add to the smooth running machine at the end of the day.

I actually stopped. I put 'd' on there, network utils and stopped. That was all I needed. No X, no gui's, just sweet ol' CLI. However, I've read mixed stories about compiling X, so good luck if that's your goal. Really shooting for bare minimum, and don't have the need for ANY KDE apps, leave it out. You'll lose a lot of time compiling that, and if you never use it, it'll just take up space and maybe even slow you down.

Um, yeah, so basically, go for 'd' and 'n' and the rest is all gravy.

I've weaned myself from any KDE or Gnome programs so that won't be a problem (except the libs QT and GTK+) and I've already downloaded and burned to CD most of the stuff I need. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

1. A packages
2. D packages
3. N packages

Sounds cool... I may go that way for the server I am building.

I run a minimal install of slack on both my servers. Havn't had any problems...The one is a P Pro 180 with 64 megs ram and 2 2 gig hard drives. It runs 8.1 with some updates such as the dhcp one and others. I installed Apache + PHP + MySQL from source, as well as a Counter-Strike server for the kids on my floor here at school. I also run the floor's forums as well as the SETI@Home project. Just some mic. stats...

What are the absolute minimum packages from the N list that you can get by with and still have your Slackware box either on a DHCP or static IP network?

I want to do a minimal Slackware install using only A, D, N and the libraries but I want to compile the latest Apache, MySQL and PHP from source.

I want enough X to run Fluxbox too...

i do slack9.0 without X just use mc for file managment and vi or joe for editing....it is fast and simple.....it is on a 1Ghz P3....fast and simple thats how i like it....

When I first started in Linux, I used zipslack to see if it was worthwhile. I stayed with that for about two years, tho I used mips to repartition my drive and then moved zipslack to its own ext2 partition. I would highly reccommend it as a minimal slack install.

You might want to add K series as well. If you need to recompile the kernels you need will be with you. Im trying to get them straight from the cd since I did'nt install K series and recompiling needs some of the things the K install must give you. good luck

Astro, does that cs server run at all good on a p180? i would figure the clients would lag out on a machine like that?

Well yes and no. If I just let the CS run on a lan game everything was fine, anyone on campus would play and it was decent. As soon as someone jumped on from the net the lag hit. Right now I have changed the server TONS... it's running a 333 that I picked up at work. In addition to the counter-strike server it now runs a quake 2 server, cause we all know how good a quake 2 game it late at night ;-) At the moment the server is at http://stfuidc.com:3000/nuke/ or http://tyrantanic.net:3000/nuke/ System information is at http://stfuidc.com:3000/sysinfo/ take a look if you like, those URL's will change in a few days and won't be available till August 31st when I get back to school.
