Midnight Commander

When I am browsing the midnight commander and I want to read a text file I press F4 and I can read it but there are a lot of Ms all around the file. Why?

F4 is edit mode - F3 is view mode. You are probably viewing the non-printing characters.

Maybe you were viewing a file from DOS that contains CR+LF, while Linux expecting only LF.

You may convert DOS text file to Linux Text file by using dos2unix utility.
