Midi...(Yes, another one)

OK...I need to play midi files. I've installed timidity+++, d/l'd both soundfonts and pat, installed all, and when I use kmidi, i hear a HORRIBLE wa-wa-dingle sounds. Using alsa as the output server, the 4 channels show under midi settings in kmidi, only port 0 works. hardware is a intel chipset using ess-maestro 3 driver thru alsa
Any ideas?
How can I play midis?
I even installed wine and wmp 6, no good

I think I know what the horrible sound is...too much reverb. How do I change it? And if/when I have to change the timidity.cfg file, how do i restart timidity without rebooting? All I need is to play a couple of midi songs so they're at least listenable. Using a laptop so the wife can take it to church to play the music for children's choir, but this is TERRIBLE.
If i change the timidity.cfg file, and just run timidity again, I double the ports in kmidi. (Which port do I use?)

Hi,
don't know if this helps, i compiled prboom (doom I & II port) and it uses Timidity, i compiled sdl_mixer and extracted the file timidity.tar.gz under /usr/local/lib/ Prboom compiled and worked great, the midis play like it was win98, i did the same in debian and it didn't sound as good. Here's link, scroll to the bottom of the page. Good luck http://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_mixer/

Actually, it's way to much distortion, like it's amplified before it gets to the sound card. Anybody have any ideas on how to rectify this? Like a switch for timidity that cuts down on the amp? I know there's one for reverb, but is there one for pre-amp like setting?
