The card reader is supposed to be a: Card Reader SD(XC)/MMC/MS/XD (Built-in on a MSI GT680R laptop). I have tried different SD cards like SD and SDHC, as well as different brands and capacities. None of them has been read by the card reader. In all cases, no message in dmesg.

Any hint?

Cheers,

Well, I once found out that I could not mount SD HC cards with a 2.6-kernel. I would recommend to try it out, simply install the kernel-sources from current and build a custom kernel, boot it and try it out.

Back then I did not use a generic kernel and as far as I remember I did not build special modules for the SD HC cards, but it worked as soon as the 3.? kernel was running.

Markus,

Thanks for the hint. Yes, I had a faintest thought that a kernel upgrading could solve that detail. Anyway, I have been delaying upgrading my kernel to > 3.X because... well, because by using Slackware everything has been running so smoothly and shinning that I was being just lazy... but maybe it is time to get those music and pictures read directly from the SD cards. Your experience seems to confirm that.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Don't get me wrong, you don't have to substitute the stock-kernel, just install the 3.? additionally. You can make an additional entry for the new kernel in your lilo.conf and boot it.

If the new kernel works properly, you can replace the old one, but in this case I would consider an upgrade to current.

Yes, of course. maybe I should have written "It is time to TRY any of the 3.X kernels". And yes, I agree with you, I will be doing it using (most likely) the one in -current.

Hi caduqued,

Running current here, so the 3.2.13 kernel. But I also have a rescue kernel 2.6.32 for when things like this happen and the card reader works there even with the huge.s kernel.
All I can report, is that up until the latest current, my card reader worked all of the time using the huge.s kernel in whatever flavour it was at the time, but the very latest for some reason requires an initrd. Laptop uses a realtek card driver which is compatible with the tifm module.
