Math Emulation Clariciation

Back before the first pentiums, going from 486SX and 386SX (SX implying that there no math co-processor, and DX implying that there is one) perhaps I would understand the need to enable the math emulation option under the kernel configuration, but now that we are in the faster end on the processing spectrum, the math-co processor has gone away, so my question is, should I enable math emulation in the kernel, or is it not even necessary?

enable it, you either need a coprocessor, or emulation

i see , so I guess just about everyone with an x86 Pentium or AMD would enable that feature then right?

Still I find it rather strange, since I thought the co processor went away after the 486DX , that the processor itself would handle floating point and other types of math operations itself. *shrug*

I disabled it. Kernel 2.6.8.1. AMD Athlon XP 2500+. No change that I can see.
Code:
shilo@shilo2:~$ cat /usr/src/linux/.config|grep -i math
# CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION is not set
