MATE Desktop Environment packages for Slackware

I thought this would interest a few people here. MATE Desktop Environment packages have been added to the Salix 13.37 repositories. These packages work perfectly fine with Slackware 13.37 of course.

For anyone that isn't familiar with MATE, it's a Gnome2 fork that was created when Gnome3 was released with all the resulting drama. The Mate developers seem to have cleaned up most (all?) issues that surfaced from forking and renaming everything and the mate desktop is now on par with Gnome 2.32.x, while also being an active project.

Slackware users that have slapt-get installed, only need to add the salix repository in their package sources and run:
Code:

slapt-get --install-set mate
that should take care of everything.

If you want to download and install the packages manually, you can get the packages from the following locations:

i486 mirrors
ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/salix/i486/13.37/salix/mate
http://salix.enialis.net/i486/13.37/salix/mate/
http://download.salixos.org/i486/13.37/salix/mate/
http://mirrors.nix.org.ua/linux/sali....37/salix/mate

x86_64 mirrors
ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/salix/x86....37/salix/mate
http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.37/salix/mate/
http://download.salixos.org/x86_64/13.37/salix/mate/
http://mirrors.nix.org.ua/linux/sali....37/salix/mate

(some mirrors may not have synced yet)

You'll also need the following packages that are needed and which are not included in a full Slackware installation:
Code:

cairomm
glibmm
gtkmm
libcanberra
libgtop
libsigc++
libsoup
libunique
pangomm
upower

All of these packages are also available from the Salix repositories, so you can get those from there too.

So, if you liked Gnome2 and don't agree with how Gnome3 has turned out, give these a spin. :)

I think you will have to install slapt-get before you can run that command

Uzuki 04-06-2012 12:23 PM

Already installed, did xwmconfig to change to mate, but when i tried startx i got xfce, strange

I installed it, and it's swift and stable. Thank you, Gapan. Kudoos to the MATE-developers.

I installed this on Slackware 13.37 (works good) and then upgrade to Slackware-Current (still works good :)).
KDM didn't detect MATE so I made a symlink:
Code:

ln -s /usr/share/xsessions/mate.desktop /usr/share/apps/kdmsessions/
and now I can choose MATE in KDM.
default look:

it wasn't good for me so I installed one theme from Bisigi Themes and gtk murrine engine, now I have:

Thanks Gaspan for this topic, I always like Gnome 2.x and I was sad because now GNOME SlackBuild provides version 3.2 for 13.37.

Yes, that's what I said:

Slackware users that have slapt-get installed...

but as I said, you can install them all manually with installpkg/pkgtool.

You either ran xwmconfig as root, but you have a separate ~/.xinitrc in your user account, so that takes precedence anyway, or you don't have write permissions in your ~/.xinitrc, which is weird.

Ah, good, thanks for the info. I can add that symlink in the packages by default.

@gapan
Thanks, it seems that xinitrc was the problem. Another question, about GNOME Keyring, is it safe to disable this, since MATE has it's own MATE Keyring?

I think you need gnome-keyring for apps that specifically need it, not for mate itself though.

I add source to /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc

Remove the "salix/mate" part at the end of your sources.

kabamaru 08-02-2012 04:33 PM

Great job :) Is there a MATE equivalent for gedit?

It is called Pluma. Check out the applications page.

Caja is Nautilus and you can use DropBox in MATE now if you want to.

MysticalGroovy 10-05-2012 08:06 AM

installation went smoothly on Slackware14 using MATE pkgs from salix14 repos but there's no MATE entry on xwmconfig.
