Hi


Recently my KDE 3.3.0, on Slackware 10.0 has undergone a marked deteriation in performance. See
Application take a longer time to start up, but when they are up and running, the performance is the same as before, but only application time has slowed done considerably.

I sometimes note that the KDE logo at the startup also takes time to appear

Any suggestions

Why not ditch KDE and try a lighter-weight environment or window manager. XFCE, IceWM and WindowMaker all offer a fair number of bells and whistles but are must more responsive than KDE or Gnome. And if you want to go more minimalist, you can try fluxbox, pekwm, etc., window managers.

I like Linux a lot more now that I've stopped relying on KDE. I still recommend KDE for friends who are just jumping out of the (Microsoft) Window, however.

Unless your desktop appearance is precious, you could try logging out of kde, deleting all kde related stuff in your home directory and in /tmp, and starting up kde again. I'm guessing that some problem has developed with your user kde start up data. If so, you need to get kde to rebuild it from scratch.

If you don't want to lose work you've done to customize your desktop, try first creating a new user and starting up in kde as that user. If there is no slow down, that will confirm the diagnosis that it is a problem with user start up data. Then, if that does turn out to be the problem, you can temporarily rename various kde directories and files in your home directory, to try to zero in on the one causing the problem. Hopefully, you can preserve most of your customizations.

Have you given KDE a fresh install? Maybe an update? Give it a try and see how she runs. . .

Also, you could drop back down to kde 3.2 that was given with slack 10. .. then upgrade agian to the latest version that slackware provides.

I have the same problem. It's not a problem from KDE. As i do LOTS of things on my system, i can't determine what is the problem. Every program launches slower. Even xmms has glitches when i launch others apps.
1- Perhaps it's a problem in slackware-current (really note sure).
2- Can be a hard drive management problem, because applis works as well as before (ex.: no performance loss in quake3).
3- Perhaps a kernel bug. I use 2.6.9.
4- I use ATI drivers 3.14.6 (as they suxx with linux, it's suspect).
5- I watch the lasts changelogs of current, but as i'm a semi-noob, i can't determine what can be guilty^^. Bash? Udev?
6- I'm sure this problem appears during october.

Why should I? I'v been using kde since versio n 3.1 and I've loved it! It's never given my a headache, and this is the first time

Try installing prelink, running prelink -afmRv, and then disabling kdeinit. It's supposed to help KDE startup time a lot. Not exactly a solution to your particular problem, but hey. ;)

Also, it's possible that KDE 3.3 is just slower. I've used it on a Gentoo box and it seemed oddly slow....

You're right, as are the guys who're helping you get KDE fixed. I suggested trying another environment or window manager because I thought you were getting disatisfied with KDE's responsiveness.

What I like about Linux is its relatively speedy performance on an aging machine. KDE and Gnome are heavy enough on my system that they cancel out that performance benefit. But I still boot into KDE for certain configuration tasks, since it is easy to work with.

THIS IS NOT A KDE PROBLEM. (Don't want to seem obvious.)

There is a problem with 2.6.9 version of kernel. I dislike patches but this one is life-saving ;)

It doesn't mean this alone is the source of your problems but hope it helps.
On my laptop runs Slackware current with KDE 3.3.2, kernel 2.6.9 with above patch and system is very fast and responsive.

yah, this is why I wait a bit before installing a new kernel...

I'm still on 2.6.8.1 for now... gonna wait till 2.6.10 is out for a bit before updating to it.

I try to skip a release every so often if what I have works for me....
