Question man page question

Ok, now this may be a stupid question or one that I should already know, anyway, here it is cos this has been bugging me for some time.

when you see reference to a command, such as mount(8), tunefs(8), find(1), etc.

what does the number in the parenthesis refer to?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, the first time I took a linux certification exam they asked a similar question, like "What section will the ls manpage be in" or something.

I knew it /had/ sections but I was wowefully oblivious to their actual meanings.

Incidentally if you start up xman you can browse by section.
