'make' command missing!(slackware 9)

I am making a linux firewall, so i installed slackware linux 9.0 and two nic's.
after i was done installing, i installed the source code, so i could install the drivers for one of the nic's. it told me to install the source code(which i did) after which it told me to go to /usr/src/linux and type ' make menuconfig '
and then i get bashed! can anyone tell me whats going on?
(note: when i installed i slimmed it down quite a bit from the full install, maybe i didnt install something i should have?)

or find the version that corresponds to slackware 9 on your install cd's

i guess my question is why do i not have the make command, after pressing tab tab and selecting yes, (thereby displaying all the commands) the make command is not in the list, why not? how do i get it back?

because for some reason its not installed perhaps? hence why i was pointing you to the package you need.
