mail client in slackware
 

does..any one know a decent mail client ie..something like microsoft outlook?i think a couple of mail clients are provided in my slackmachine.but i dont know how to configure them..they are asking for the protocol..my mail id is in yahoo.so what protocol is it following?is it SMTP or sendmail.also ...for receiving a mail..i am asked to enter a protocol again..the options being POP3 and IMAP..again..i dont know what to enter and i got stuck..can anyone answer this?

If you have got an web based email acount at yahoo.com you wont be able to access it thru a mail client. I think you need to subscribe to some sort of "extra" service in order to be able to use pop.
For regular emailing, I use kmail, which is included in slack 1. (depending on what you chose to install).

But again, before you can configure anything, you need to make sure that your mail provider allows you to connect via pop or imap.

You have to pay for an upgraded yahoo account to have pop3 access. Try searching "yahoo mail sucker" at freshmeat.net for a program that will let you access your yahoo account without going to the website.

The Email client that I use is Evolution, by Ximian. Personally I think it's excellent. If you want to build it manually you can d/l it from here: http://www.linuxpackages.net/ or if you want to go the simple and fast way, I (highly) recommend installing Dropline. http://www.dropline.net/gnome/ Dropline is a large collection of commonly used packages, and includes Evolution. Installation is quick and easy. You might want to give it a try -- J.W.

hey thanx for that iwould definitely try ..evolution..i think i will try to build it manually.i have n't gat much space either on my harddisk to install it from dropline.com ..thanx anyway..i wil try out evolution..:)

it might be off-topic but if you are planning on installing Evolution manually just be a bit strong at heart. you might experience loads of dependency issue one after another. take around 3-4 hours off and then just sit and do it all. you can be rest assured it is worth the hard work :D

Just remember that you still wont be able to use your yahoo mail, even of you install Evolution. You still need to pay the additional fee to be able to use pop3.

Dont know about that "yahoo mail sucker" thing, never tried it.

I will echo abhay's comments about possible dependency problems when trying to install Evolution by hand. The Linuxpackages site will identify the other packages Evolution needs, but just be prepared to possibly spend a fair amount of time on this project if you are doing it manually. The point, which I probably should have emphasized in my previous post, is that installing Evolution is NOT as simple as just installing one package. Depending on what is (or isn't) already installed on your machine, you may need to first install a dozen or so other packages first before you'd be in a position to proceed with Evolution. Obviously it's possible to install Evo manually, and doing so would be a great educational exercise, however, if all you're really interested in is just getting Evo up and running, it's probably a lot faster to let Dropline handle it for you. The Mozilla mail client is very good now, but others comments about yahoo still apply

I agree with davidsrsb. The Mozilla mail client works just fine, it has everything that outlook express has, without the gaping security holes. And it comes with (arguably) the best browser for Linux. (I don't want to make that argument, it's just my opinion).

Also, check out the following link for a program that automatically gathers your yahoo mail and creates/simulates a POP3/SMTP server that you can use with any mail client.
