LT Winmodem Driver Issues
 

Hi there, i am a total *nix newb, and as you can see, also new to this forum. i wasn't sure where to post this, exactly, or whether to post it in a months-old thread (Nov 05 thread giving driver download locations), so i apologise if i goofed up starting this new thread.

i'm trying to configure a LT winmodem for Slack 10.2. The problem is, after installing the drivers, i can only locate the major node (62) in /proc/devices, but couldn't find the minor, so i'm kinda lost from here.

If this isn't enough info, apologies again, and i'll go do a uname -a or whatever else i need to do, but since i'm logged in and have to disconnect from the net to go over to my slack partition, i'm hoping this is enough information to get some guidance.

It's been awhile since I used my Lucent WinModem so I'm rusty on the process involved in making a module for it. But I seem to remember all I had to do was run the install script and it did everything. So my questions are:
What driver are you installing? ltmodem?
Does the install script complete without any errors?
Does the driver (module) load? To find out type lsmod and post results.
Do you have any ltmodem stuff in /etc/modprobe.conf?
Do you have an appropriate device in /dev e.g. /dev/ttsLT0

Ok, in order:

ltmodem V1456VQH89B, driver 8.31a10.

No errors from install script.

Yes, the ltmodem driver, it completes and loads into the kernel,
no modification to /etc/modprobe.conf -- haven't got there yet.

Well, i can't FIND it in /dev, but it should be there, so that's part of my problem. See, it was attached to com4, but when i put it there in Slack, it said it wasn't there. :scratch:

i should add, i have had a LOT of help getting this far from a *nix guru, but now we are totally baffled.

Like /bin/bash it has been awhile but I remember that the first install script prompted you to run an additional script and the second script prompted you to run the third script which made the link between /dev/modem and /dev/ttsLT0. By default Slackware makes a link between /dev/modem and /dev/tty3 (com4) at install and the third script will fail unless you delete /dev/modem prior to running.
When you setup ppp (kppp or pppsetup) use /dev/modem.

Grr, i forgot to add that the issue was that i somehow skipped the second script in install. Anyway, it worked.
