I am running into a strange problem trying to set up a printer.
Basically, I just can't get it going. I use KDE's printer manager
to set up. It just asked the basics:
1) Device (lp0)
2) Model/driver (Epson Stylus C60)
Then just start lpd, and it has always worked for me before.
I know lp0 is a proper device. I can "cat filename > /dev/lp0"
and get simple ascii to print on my printer. When I do a normal
print job through my spooler NOTHING happens.
I can see with lsmod that lp.o is there.
lpd starts with no complaints.
I can see that lpd got the printjob when I go to remove the job.
I can find no error messages in any log files.
This is turning into an incredible mystery.
Is there something obvious that I need to consider besides setting
up /etc/printcap and starting lpd? I keep having this stupid feeling
like there has to be some very obvious thing I am forgetting.
Well, hotplug has failed detecting my parallel port stuff, so i just uncommented the corresponding lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to load all parallel stuff, then i got the parallel port as an option on cups which is what i use to print.
I didn't mess with the rc.modules script, but I modprobed lp by hand.
Then I tried cups, but (as you address) it never recognized my
parallel port.
I will try adding the mods with the script like you did and see what happens.
STILL... It just seems odd to me that with the same printcap file and
the machine that worked before, that lpd just sits there and doesn't even give me an error
of any kind.
