Loving the new version of tar in current

In case no one noticed the current tree just upgraded to tar 1.15.1 which has an awsome new feature. From the changlog:

Code:
Compressed archives are recognised automatically,
it is no longer necessary to specify -Z, -z, or -j options to read them.
Thus, you can now run tar tf archive.tar.gz and expect it to work!
nice, I was getting so sick of typing -xzvf when it was a .tar.bz and having to do it all over again.

LOL......this is what shell scripts are for.....I wrote a script that works with tar.bz OR tar.gz and put it in my ~/.home dir ---the command would be..
Code:
untar.sh <filename>

I was just about to say that you've been able to do this for quite a while, then I realised the OP posted this 9 months ago. Why has it been brought up again?

Well, I think the new behaviour is not entirely correct... it's convenient, but not very correct, IMO. What I always do is:

bzip2 -dc my_archive.tar.bz2 | tar xv

IMHO, this is the correct way.
