Suddenly i lost sound on my slackware 14.1. Tried to troubleshoot but to no avail.

The lspci is as follows.

Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5)
00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev b5)
00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev b5)
00:1c.7 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 8 (rev b5)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM67 Express Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05)
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05)
05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 05)
09:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
The aplay -L is as follows:

Code:
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=PCH
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
    Default Audio Device
sysdefault:CARD=PCH
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, 92HD87B1/3 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output
Also from the mixer in multimedia, i see that some of controls, including master and headphone, are muted by default. Removing mute does not help. Internal mic when unmuted plays a monotone sound and nothing else happens.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

There's not much we can tell you, since you omit any of the crucial details.

You say "suddenly" you lost sound; 'suddenly' WHEN? What did you do/were doing, before the sound was lost? Has it EVER worked, You say you tried troubleshooting..but don't tell us ANYTHING about what you did, or what the results were.

So your audio device is found, which is good.

And after you removed the mute, did you turn the volume up?? And how does your internal MICROPHONE (an INPUT device), play a tone???

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the insufficient info. The last thing i did was to install mule. After reboot i had no sound.

The issue is partially resolved. When i unmute all the controls and turn up the volume of master, headphone, and speaker i get sound. But i have to do every time.

Now could you help me how to boot the system with controls at the position when i shutdown the system?

You should run
Code:
alsactl store
as root to store alsamixer values.
